Capuchin Monasteries in the Diocese of Litoměřice between 1900 and 1950

This thesis aims to present six Capuchin monasteries in the Litoměřice diocese in the first half of the 20th century. The focus is on the internal workings of each convent: education, building activities, equipment and related communication with other institutions or persons. The history of the monasteries itself is preceded by introductory chapters introducing the history of the Capuchins in the Czech lands and the development of the relations of the Catholic Church with the various state formations that replaced each other in our territory in the first half of the 20th century. An important chapter is also devoted to important personalities, with shorter medallions presenting religious, Quardians and other persons who have made a significant contribution to the modern history of these six convents. In connection with the monasteries of the Litoměřice diocese, themes such as the postoloprt massacre after second World War, the "K" action. It is also necessary to briefly mention the current state of the monasteries and their use.

Architecture of Franciscan Observant Monasteries in Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Upper Lusatia in Second Half of the 15th Century

So far the history of medieval Franciscan Observance has been considered as the history of individual monasteries, or more generally as the history of disputes concerning education, culture and nationality. The aim of the present dissertation is to describe the history in terms of cultural history, to analyze wider issues of architecture regarding monastic buildings of the last big monastic community of The Middle Ages, to describe them and evaluate. The basic structure of the dissertation consists of monographic chapters monitoring the history and building development of fifteen preserved and thirteen extinct monasteries in territory of the Czech monastic province (Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Upper Lusatia). The catalogue part is introduced by chapters summarizing the historical context of Franciscan Observants' activities within a short period between the second half of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century, during which the Observants of the Czech province experienced both the stage of raise and decay. The history of the order is then followed by an essay on the rules of the process of foundation constructions of the convents, the order rules limiting artwork and mainly the character of the order architecture. Conrad Fischer. Life and Work of the Borovan Provost

The thesis is dedicated to the person and work of the Borovan provost Conrad Fischer (1631-1701). Based on study of the preserved sources in Czech and foreign archives is in the first part primarily reconstructed the life of Fischer, which took place during the turbulent years of the Thirty Years' War and in the times of the post-war development. The attention is focused on youth of Fischer, education, entry into the order of Augustinian Canons in Klosterneuburg and work in the Borovan Monastery, where he was elected provost in the year 1677. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to codicological analysis and content analysis of the work about history of the Borovan Monastery by Fischer, which he wrote at the end of his life and which original is in the present deposited in Trebon department of the State Regional Archives Trebon. The last part of the thesis includes the critical edition of this work, complemented by nominal and geographical and local registers.

Formation and evolution of Brno's suburb Černá Pole

TITLE: Formation and evolution of Brno's suburb Černá Pole AUTHOR: Jakub Sluka DEPARTMENT: Department of History and History Didactics SUPERVISOR: Mgr. Dušan Foltýn ABSTRACT: The bachelor thesis deals with origin and development of the residential quarter Černá Pole, namely from the settlement of this area to 1945. Attention is mainly focused on the 20th century. The part regarding Antiquity is primarily based on published researches of various archaelogical digs. The investigation of the period from the 14th to 18th century is grounded in preserved archival materials, especially documents. The gradual expansion of street network and local housing development, with emphasis on a period housing situation, in Brno from the beginning of building development in the 19th century to the end of World War Two is minutely studied by means of map collections, old photos and postcards, period newspapers, and a lot of scholarly books and articles. A particular focus is devoted to some important architectural buildings and interesting events in the history of Černá Pole. The pictorial supplement includes a lot of photos depicting present-day appearance of the quarter. The Origins of Christian Monasticism

Monasticism is a specific way of life, which has its place in all world religions. Its forms differ by geographical, cultural and temporal situation, however, there are several aspects, common to all monks. It is first of all interruption of contacts with their environment and escape into solitude, renunciation of property, observance of celibacy and strict asceticism. In Christianity is monasticism understood to be an answer to call of God, its goal is to be a better follower of Jesus Christ's ideal, what is more complicated for other Christians, because of their profane duties. This thesis examines Christian monasticism in its early form, before rise of main religious orders. Special attention is paid to the personal dimension of monasticism, that is to motives, which brought Desert Fathers and their disciples to monasticism, to particularity and emphases of their spirituality, ethics and everyday life. Other intention is to present a timelessness of first monks spirituality, and that it could be still inspiring for today's Christian. But it is barely possible without comprehensive introduction to the historical background, what is the third goal of this thesis.

Monasteries in Danger. Disputes about Liquidation of Czech and Moravian Monasteries of the "Old Orders" in the Period before the Battle of White Mountain

Liquidation of monasteries in the era of Reformations is a phenomenon which has been studied only to a certain level. There were very many cases of abolished or liquidated monasteries. The author concentrates only on two cases (Augustinian canonries in Kłodzko and Olomouc) where efforts to liquidate a monastery were met with resistance from the community or monastic structures. It is a multilayered topic, requiring a thorough analysis. Due to the fact that these disputes were interfered by a number of influential personalities (supreme provincial officials, nuncios, bishops, superiors of monastic orders etc.), it represents an ideal material to study the relationships within the high society in the era before the Battle of White Mountain. Besides the high politics we can also focus on other aspects - such as legal arguments of the conflicting parties or linguistic, art historical or theological layer. After research not only in Czech, but also in foreign archives (e.g. Rome, Kraków, Kłodzko, Wrocław, Vienna), the author refills or corrects older conclusions (Jan Tenora, Aloys Bach etc.). He also tries to verify the theory that within the Catholic Church those monasteries were abolished which were - in the economic and also spiritual layer - in a state of deep crisis.

Dolonnuur monastery and relations between the Qing court, Inner Mongolia and Khalkha in 17th-19th centuries reflected by selected archive materials

This thesis deals with selected forms of the Manchu court influence on the relations of Khalkha and Inner Mongolia, eventually Northern China. It describes mainly the influences in the field of Buddhism (sir-a-yin šasin). It underlines the development of cultural-religious relations, phenomenon of pilgrimages, particularly the pilgrimages to Wutaishan, but the main topic is the role of Dolonnuur monastery and Dolonnuur municipality in the religious relations between Khalkha, Inner Mongolia and the Manchu court. Author points out, how the transitional period of these relations is reflected in the stories of Dolonnuur monks and in the increasing importance of Dolonnuur as a center of Chinese trade. This analysis is based on the local archive sources unpublished so far, especially the correspondence diaries of Dolonnuur monastery administrative bureau.
